Tell us about yourself

I began my marketing career in 2010 at an advertising agency in Toronto. I worked with large CPG clients on traditional and digital advertising campaigns, where I learned from an amazing team about brand strategy, storytelling, and client relationship building. I continued my marketing journey across two other large and small firms for the next 8 years. During my first pregnancy in 2019, I became frustrated with the lack of options for dressing my new body shape. Most brands were producing outdated silhouettes in scratchy fabrics, and it was difficult to dress well for my days. I decided to take some online courses in fashion sketching and design and created our first design in 2021. We launched in May and sold out quickly, so we kept adding more styles and growing our brand locally and abroad. We now have 8 SKUs with customers all over the world.

I'm motivated each day by hearing from the women we help dress. They tell us they feel beautiful, they feel comfortable, and that they feel much more like themselves in our contemporary designs. Parenthood is difficult; your clothes shouldn't make it any harder. We love to help women feel confident along their journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been developing an entirely new skill set and working with an amazing group of suppliers within Canada. We manufacture all our apparel locally and work with a strong network of women-owned businesses that champion one another.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Having to be in the moment and focus on sales and marketing while also living in the future and planning new collections 3-6 months in advance. It's difficult to balance the needs of the now with the future, but we are learning so much and growing our knowledge base every day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Everyone will offer you advice; ultimately, you need to listen to your intuition and go with your gut.
  2. Your network and the internet are full of so many [free] resources that you can lean on to start your business, no matter how small your budget.
  3. You can start small. From a small collection to a small roster of clients, starting small allows you to test, iterate and improve so you can take those learnings and apply them as you grow.
